Driver Bio

Born in 1983 in Starnberg, West Germany, Sutil didn’t start karting until he was 14 years old. Up until then his main passion was playing the piano.

In 2002 he moved into Swiss Formula Ford and dominated the series, winning and taking pole position at every race.

The next year he moved to Formula BMW ADAC and finished the championship sixth.

He moved to the Formula Three Euroseries in 2004 racing for Team Kolles. At the last race of the season he moved to the ASM team where he remained for the next season where he finished runner-up to teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Sutil spent 2006 in Japan taking part in the All-Japan Formula Three Championship and went on to win the championship. Midland F1 Racing announced him as one of their Test Drivers and he took part in Practice sessions for the team.

Midland F1 Racing were renamed Spyker MF1 and offered Sutil a drive for the 2007 season. The car was largely uncompetitive but Sutil impressed by outqualifying and outperforming teammates Christijian Albers and Sakon Yamamoto.

He scored his first points and the team's first points at the Japanese Grand Prix after Vitantonio Liuzzi received a post-race penalty which promoted Sutil into the points.

Spyker was renamed Force India for 2008 and Sutil remained with the team but struggled to make headway again due to an uncompetitive car. He almost finished the Monaco Grand Prix in a season best fourth position but was hit by Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari and forced to retire.

Force India retained Sutil again in 2009 and the German had a better year thanks to a more competitive car. His highest finish of the year was fourth at the Italian Grand Prix.

The German remained with Force India the following year and had a strong start to the season, outperforming teammate Liuzzi and picking up points at most races in the first half of the season.

He stayed with the team again in 2011 and was joined by rookie Paul di Resta who gave him a run for his money. Sutil managed a season best of fifth in Monaco and finished the championship 13th overall.

Force India opted to replace Sutil with Nico Hulkenberg and he found himself without a drive for the 2012 season.

At the start of 2013, Force India announced that Sutil would be making a return to the team and finished the first race of the season seventh. He struggled to outrace teammate di Resta throughout the year and finished the season in 13th place, 19 points behind his teammate.
Sutil will join Sauber for 2014.

Car number: Sutil chose the number 99 because he says he is always aiming for the maximum, and 99 was the highest number available.
