Driver Bio

Esteban Gutierrez was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1991 and began his karting career in 2004 by taking part in the Mexican Rotax Max Challenge.

He took part in the Rotax Max Challenge again the following year and the Grand Nationals in Indiana, where he finished third and took part in the World Finals in Malaysia as a result and placed 22nd.

In 2007 he stepped up to Formula BMW USA and finished the series runner-up after four victories.

Gutierrez switched to Europeans series in 2008 taking part in the Formula BMW Europe Championship. He dominated the series and won seven races.

As a prize for winning the Formula BMW Europe Championship, he took part in a test for BMW-Sauber in Jerez. During 2009 he also took part in the European Formula Three series and finished ninth overall.

In 2010 he took part in the inaugural GP3 series for ART Grand Prix and won the championship comfortable with two races to go before the end of the season.

The next step was GP2 and he remained with ART, who were renamed Lotus ART for 2011. Gutierrez finished the season 13th place with just one race win.

Sauber named him as their Reserve Driver in 2011 and he almost took part in his first Formula One race when Sauber needed a replacement for Sergio Perez for the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix.

As Gutierrez was in Mexico and a replacement driver was needed by the end of Free Practice 2, Sauber opted to use McLaren Test Driver Pedro de la Rosa instead.

He remained Sauber’s test and reserve driver for 2012 and continued in GP2 with Lotus ART, who were now known as Lotus GP. Gutierrez won three races and finished the season in third place.

At the end of the 2012 season Sauber confirmed that Gutierrez would race for them the following season.

Gutierrez finished his first F1 race in 13th place after qualifying 18th. The Mexican seemed to struggle during qualifying at the beginning of the year but performed well during races and improved throughout the year.

His first points score came at the Japanese Grand Prix where he finished seventh.

He will remain at Sauber for the 2014 season.

Car number: Gutierrez chose the number 21 because it’s his lucky number and it’s the age he was when he first started racing in F1.
